Focusing on Columbus

This week we have been focusing on Christopher Columbus!! To refresh my memory on Columbus I watched a wonderful documentary on Hulu titled Biography ChristopherColumbus: Explorer of the New World! It was full of information that I had forgotten over time, as well as some knew information that I found interesting! I highly recommend it!

We also found many picture books at the library. Two of the favorites that we read were Follow the Dream - The Story of Christopher Columbus by Peter Sis and A Picture Book of Christopher Columbus by, David A. Adler. They covered the basics of Columbus and the illustrations were very well done!

Throughout the week we talked about the life of Columbus, his voyage, as well as his discovery of America. I also used this time to introduce the concept of a compass as well as North, South, East, and West. Both of my little ones were very familiar with maps and what they were used for, but we had never really talked about a compass and the four main directions on the compass.

We also did a variety of activities! Both of them know how to draw boats, so they each drew three boats and named them the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. My oldest used her picture to tell me the story of Columbus in her own words, and I used this my assessment of her understanding of Columbus.  We also, made sailor hats and they pretended to be Columbus and sail in their boats (cardboard boxes), this was my little guy's favorite activity this week. We also went on a walk through our neighborhood using our new direction words!

For the little ones I found many videos and cartoons on YouTube that were very age appropriate for preschoolers and held their interest. Here are a few of our favorites!

I also found the Christopher Columbus song titled In 1492 … / Columbus Day Song ForChildren that we all grew up with as well. It is a catchy tune, and caught both of them singing it around the house!!
